January 1, 2018 We wish a Happy New Year to all followers of the Big
Chris Barber Band and to all readers of this website.
We start the year 2018 with a great article about the
British Music Experience, Liverpool, written by Jason Whiton.
Jason Whiton got in contact with the webmasters
earlier in 2017, informing about the opening of this new
museum in Liverpool. Thanks Jason, for sharing your
interesting article with us.
The history of British music is steeped in
legendary figures who shaped the cultural landscape of the
world. A new museum opened in Liverpool in March, 2017 that is
devoted to this rich history.

band consisting of musicians of the bands of Chris Barber,
Kenny Ball and Mr. Acker Bilk.

February 3, 2014 Hans from the Netherlands informed us
these days that he has uploaded on you tube a documentary film

January 1, 2014 - Happy New Year This
website is now in its 11th year! Starting January 1, 2004 with
the contents of the (private) websites of Ed Jackson and
Andreas Wandfluh and with the fantastic help of the bands
archivist, the late Julian Purser, this website has been
developped into one of the largest musician website worldwide.
Many Chris Barber fans all over the world supported us (and
still do) with pictures, leaflets, posters, newspaper articles
etc. etc. and helped us in our work. Our thanks and best
wishes go to all these supporting people and to all readers
and followers of this site. We like to be in contact with Jazz
fans worldwide and to keep you informed about the music of
Chris Barber and his bands. Despite the fact that this website
is the official Chris Barber Website, it is still a private
project of Ed Jackson (Canada) and Andreas Wandfluh
(Switzerland) and we do all our work in our free time.
Actually we have to solve some issues with the photo
pages, incl. the Pat Halcox Photo Archive, but we hope to
activate those pages - may be partailly - in the first quarter
of 2014. Thank you very much for your comprehension. |
December 1, 2013 - additions to the
Pat Halcox Photo Archive We have rearranged the
Pat Halcox Photoarchive pages: the picture description is now
below the respective picture and no longer in the yellow
colour within the picture. Furthermore, we have added more
than a dozen of new pictures. There are many more to come -
but in many cases we have to scan and reproduce them from tiny
filmstripes... and this may take a lot of time to do that.
Check the revised Pat Halcox

November 13, 2013 - The Chris Barber 2013
6 piece band plus blues guitar player Helge Lorenz!
After the sudden death of John Slaughter in 2010, Chris Barber
has not yet added a new blues guitar player to his band.
However, on some very rare occasions the outstanding German
blues guitarist Helge Lorenz played a few tunes
and added so the very long missed "original" sound to the
Barber Band. "Goin'Home" from Hamburg
(Oct. 27, 2013) is available on youtube. This
version contains a great solo by Helge Lorenz. We normally
do not refer to youtube, but as we know that many followers of
the band would like to listen to the blues sound of Helge, we
make an exception. The video can be found here:

May 19, 2013 Not many followers of the Big
Chris Barber Band have had the opportunitiy to follow a
concert with the lastest members of the band: Amy Roberts and
Bert Brandsma. Amy is not only a fantastic reed player, but
also very keen on flte! Actually, she plays the flte in
C-Jam Blues als well as in When the Saints. Her colleague,
Bert Brandsma is a fantastic reed musician too and he proves
it with a great solo in C-Jam Blues where he plays the bass
saxophone. And finally, we have to point out that Peter
Rudeforth plays the flugelhorn in C-Jam. Why do we tell this?
Bert Brandsma posted a video with
C-Jam Blues on youtube and we think you will be very
interested in watching this video. Thanks Bert. |
May 13, 2013 Karl-Wilhelm Specht has sent
us a lot of photos from the Jazz & Blues Band period. A first

April 8, 2013 These days we have been
informed by Ed Jackson, co-organiser and co-webmaster of this

position to maintain his work at this website. I'm sure you
all wish him all the best and we hope for a quick recovery.
In the meantime, I will take full responsability for the
development of this website. However, due to business reasons,
I'will not step in until the last week of April 2013. We
have got quite a lot of new and interesting material that is
waiting for publishing. Especially Karl-Wilhelm Specht from
Germany has sent us rare photographs. Furthermore, we received
a second lot of pictures for the Pat Halcox Photo Archive.
Many thanks to Shirley Halcox for keeping open this fantastic
photographical source of the Chris Barber Bands. Thank you

The menu page of the Chris Barber website has been overhauled to reduce clutter, streamline the page, and make your visit more user-friendly. Probably the most significant change is the reduction of the "CD stack" of links within the site from the previous 30 to 15. All of the old links are covered, but in some cases with new "entry pages". If you have any comments about the new "look", please send an
e-mail message to us, or you can post on the

The concert which the Chris Barber Band performed on December 15, 1956, was among its most historic, largely because the concert was recorded and released on a full-length LP, the first in a series of three Chris Barber In Concert LPs. Since the
page for the concert programme was first posted, the website and archive team has acquired a second copy of the concert programme, in which the concert-goer listed the actual numbers played during the concert. The relevant page of the programme has been added to the web page, together with close-ups of the listings for the first and second halves of the Barber Band's performance. These lists show that the statement in the LP sleeve notes -- that it contained almost a full concert -- are not entirly accurate, as several tunes are listed that did not make their way on to the subsequent LP. |

Another Saturday Night on BBC London 94.9 FM, 15 April 06, Chris Barber plus the Soothsayers, briefly discusses the radio interview and also goes into some detail about Chris's place in British musical history: "A strong case could be made for Chris Barber being the most important living British musician, and the list of supporters would include Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Keith Richard, who all gratefully stepped on stones laid by Chris."

There's a
short but important article on a website called
Beatles Rarity Of The Week, which talks about the Barber's Band's 1967 recording of Cat Call (released on the
Battersea Rain Dance LP), a Paul McCartney instrumental composition that has often been referred to as one of the "songs the Beatles gave away." The article also compares the Barber version with a much earlier Beatles demo, but even more importantly draws a direct link between Chris Barber and the existence of The Quarry Men, who later changed their name to The Beatles: "So if not for Chris Barber, there would have been no stardom for Lonnie Donnegan, no 'skiffle craze' and therefore, no Quarry Men. It’s very arguable that The Beatles, in turn, may have never existed".

Revisions have been made to the
Big Chris Barber Band page and the
Former Members of the Band page to reflect recent personnel changes, as well as the temporary line-up of band members for the first tour of 2010.

Recent Personnel Changes in the Big Chris Barber Band
Earlier this week, Chris sent an email message to us, as co-webmasters of the Barber website, to mention some recent long-term personnel changes, as well as some temporary changes that will affect the band in the next two months or so, and therefore the line-ups of players that fans will see at concerts in the near future:
As of the January tour 2010, Bob Hunt will rejoin the band on trombone, replacing John Service.
Chris and the Band thank John for lots of serious work and play, and wish him well.
Mike Snelling has decided that he does not wish to continue to undertake long tours any further and is leaving by Christmas. The January tour will feature old friend and colleague Trevor Whiting on clarinet in Mike's place. The band may either have a new long-term regular member or perhaps two equally desirable musicians might share the position ... watch this space.
In the January tour, Vic Pitt will play bass up to and including the 18th at Dessau, Germany. Dave Green (meanwhile playing with Scott Hamilton) will rejoin the band in Berlin on the 19th.
Another new face is technician Rebecca Evans. She is now responsible for stage lighting and as an experienced sound-technician she has already taken Barry Walker's place at the sound desk in October and November while he was ill and undergoing serious treatment in Germany. He probably has to do so again and may be seen in part of the January tour only.
We are looking forward to the next year's touring as always.
These changes will shortly be incorporated into relevant pages and sections of the Barber website, such as the
biography pages for the band members, and the "Former members of the band" pages.

April 9, 2009
Julian Purser, who was Chris Barber’s archivist, co-discographer, and an integral part of the management of the Chris Barber website, has died after a long illness. Julian was a fan of the band for more than four decades, and it was as a result of his frequent visits to the Marquee Club in London in the early 1970s that he offered to take care of a mass of disorganized memorabilia that otherwise might have been discarded. Over the past thirty-five years Julian added many rare Barber-related items to this archive, as well as amassing his own impressive and enviable collection of Barber vinyl records, tapes, and compact discs. He also joined forces with well-known Dutch discographer Gerard Bielderman in compiling a comprehensive, accurate, and detailed discography of the Barber catalogue. Julian attended what must have been hundreds of Chris Barber club dates and concerts, several of which included such memorable events as the “great reunion concert” held at the Fairfield Hall in 1975, Chris’s seventy-fifth birthday concert in Liverpool, and the Lonnie Donegan memorial concert, which took place at the Royal Albert Hall. On top of all this, in recent years Julian occasionally travelled with the band, most notably to Denmark to hear them play with a symphony orchestra, as well as a memorable trip to Switzerland. Julian thoroughly enjoyed being “on the road”, and these and several other occasions are described in detail in Julian’s own words in various pages within this website, to which his contribution, since becoming a member of the three-person “website team” in 2004, was immeasurable. Julian was a good friend, an infectious enthusiast for all sorts of jazz – Chris Barber’s brand above all – and tireless in his enthusiasm for and efforts towards chronicling the career of one of Britain’s greatest musicians.

Thanks to Todd Allen of the
Cyril Davies website, here is a news item from the
Sandy Brown Jazz website, run by Ian Maund:
BFI Mediatheque - Momma Don't Allow
It is perhaps worth reminding people of information originally sent to us by Anne Hudson about the Mediatheque at the British Film Institute on London's South Bank where the 1954 Karl Reisz / Tony Richardson 22 minute film 'Momma Don't Allow' can be viewed free of charge. The film was shot over nine Saturdays at Wood Green Jazz Club and features the Chris Barber Band at the time of Monty Sunshine, Lonnie Donegan and Ottilie Patterson. It's a great short film that really captures the atmosphere and audience at the Club.
The Mediatheque is a separate room at the BFI (near the Festival Hall and Hayward Gallery). It has a number of computers with fairly large screens each with its own comfortable single or double seats. You are given headphones when you go in and instructions on how to use the computers. You plug in (there are facilities for two people to watch at the same time) and choose the piece of film you want to watch. It is a very pleasant experience, a great resource and the staff are most helpful. You can book your computer in advance or just turn up and hope one is free. For more information
click here. 'Momma Don't Allow' is also on a DVD set called 'Free Cinema' available from the
BFI.

Programme synopsis:
Ruby Turner tells the extraordinary story of the guitar playing Gospel singer, Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She was one of the most innovative Gospel musicians of her time. In her music you can hear Blues, R 'n' B and Rock 'n' Roll and is cited as an influenced for likes of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. When she married 20,000 people attended the wedding in a baseball stadium, yet when she died she was buried in an unmarked grave. Ruby Turner charts her rise to fame and popularity and subsequent demise, as white musicians began to imitate her guitar playing and Mahalia Jackson was promoted by Columbia records to be America's first gospel singer. |

This year marks the tenth top 2000, and this time the list has been assembled by the disc jockeys. At number 1914 we see Chris Barber’s Jazz Band with Ice Cream. Chris stands between the Kinks (Dead End Street) and Crispian St. Peters (Pied Piper). The second recording of Chris we find at number 1740, Petite Fleur, just between Robert Palmer (Every Kinda People) and Bronski Beat (Why). There are no other jazz records in the list, not even the Dutch Swing College Band, the most famous Dutch old-style jazz band. So this is something to be proud of! It is a pity that Lonnie Donegan is not to be found in the top 2000. (P.S., if you want to look at the list, go to
www.radio2.nl)."
