Chris Barber in Solothurn
As you probably have guessed by looking at the cover to the right, Chris Barber in Solothurn is not a commercial CD, and quite definitely, neither is the artwork. I was fortunate enough to receive the CD from a long-time Barber fan and friend of the band, and I needed a cover for the CD case, so I decided to try and emulate the LP sleeve design of Barber In Berlin, not altogether successfully. Speaking of success, though, the music on the CD is a different story, consisting of a concert recorded on what was obviously an "on" night for the Chris Barber Band. Almost every track is outstanding, and if there are any technical imperfections they are more than compensated for by terrific performances. I've chosen "New Orleans Wiggle" as a sample of the sheer joy of playing that comes through on this CD, as well as for what must be one of the most exuberant trombone breaks ever recorded.

Details for Chris Barber in Solothurn: Chris Barber (trombone), Pat Halcox (trumpet), John Crocker (reeds), John Slaughter (guitar), Johnny McCallum (banjo & guitar), Jackie Flavelle (bass), Graham Burbidge (drums). Private recording made by Niklaus Zust between 1973 and 1975 (exact date unknown).
