Chris Barber Band Box, Volume 1
The sound of the band on Chris Barber Band Box, Volume 1 is unusually crisp, which I think was partly a function of increasing technical skill on the part of the musicians, as well as the move to the Columbia label from Pye after several years of successful LPs, EPs, and singles. The selection of tunes was also adventurous and varied, as the sleeve notes explain. My own personal favourite is "Hot House Rag," which I first heard on an EP that I borrowed and recorded back in the early 1960s. It was nice to be able to get the entire album, plus some additional tracks, on the German CD, The Traditional Jazz Scene, Volume II.
