Introducing Ian
When Monty Sunshine left to form his own band in 1961, many people thought that the end was in sight for the Barber band. Ian Wheeler was a more than adequate replacement, however, establishing himself first at a poll winners' concert at the London Palladium, and then in this fine 45-rpm EP, the fourth in a series of five featuring members of the Barber "front line." Wheeler's warm clarinet tone (plus his contributions on sax, and occasionally harmonica) was a perfect complement to the rest of the band, and contributed greatly to the development of a much smoother sound of the band in the early 1960s. I've owned this record for more than forty years, which is why -- as you can see -- the cover is somewhat worn.

(The four tracks on this EP were re-issued on the Lake CD In Barber's Chair in the Fall of 2003.)

Personnel: Ian Wheeler (clarinet), Eddie Smith (banjo), Dick Smith (bass), and Graham Burbidge (drums), plus Pat Halcox (trumpet) on New Stack O'Lee.

Recording date: May 16, 1961.

Music: Sweet Lorraine, not released on CD.
